Flight School – Electric RC Airplanes by RC hobbies

There’s no doubt that flying an RC airplanes can give you quite a thrill. Maybe not the same as that you would experience when flying for real, but still it is quite exhilerating and exciting to have control of a working airplane, albeit a small one. If you’re just getting started then you have two choices of engines when choosing your first plane. You can have an electric RC airplane or you can have an internal combustion plane, typically with a glow plug engine.

Electric is most certainly the most popular choice for beginning RC hobbyists. The electric RC plane is quieter and cleaner and it is also cheaper. Plus an electric RC airplane can be flown in most public spaces, wheras a gas powered plane needs to be flown at an RC club field or on private ground.

When looking at electric powered RC planes you have a good amount of choices. Here are 4 of the popular electric RC planes with a brief description of each:

- Super Cub LP: The Super Cub LP is one of the best selling and most popular training planes for beginning RC enthusiasts. It comes ready to fly and all you need to do is charge the batteries. It also features anti-crash technology that will help out if the plane detects it is in a steep dive. Some people love this technology and some hate it, but it can be turned off on the Super Cub, so it’s really no big deal. The receiver is a 3 channel type so learning to fly is easy, but not so easy that it becomes boring quickly.

-J3 Cub: The J3 Cub is the namesake of the same plane built by Piper between 1937 and 1947. Just as that plane was popular in its time, so is the RC version of the plane today. It boasts stable flight characteristics, a brushless electric motor and a 3 channel receiver. Oh, and it looks pretty awesome too!

- Apprentice 15e: Another great beginner plane, the Apprentice 15e is very durable and a bit slower flying than other trainers, giving the beginning pilot time to react to changing events. It also comes with a 4 channel receiver, making it more realistic to fly, if a bit more difficult to learn. Once you do learn though you’re more than ready to move onto a much more powerful plane without the need to learn how to control ailerons.

- Firebird Commander: The Firebird is a pod and boom type RC plane and looks very much like a helicopter with wings instead of blades. It is quite popular as it makes for a very easy to control beginners plane. Some love the design and some hate it, but you can’t deny the Firebird Commander makes for easy flying, although it does lack somewhat in the performance department.

As a beginner if you choose one of the electric RC airplanes above you won’t go wrong. Pricing is quite reasonable, they all offer durability, stability and relative ease of flight and they all come as ready to fly so there’s no need to wait any longer than it takes to charge the airplane battery (usually 1 hour). RC flying is a rush as these planes will soon teach you!
